The Senior Center activities in the Temple have been going strong for over thirteen years; and with Sri MahaVallabha Ganeša’s benevolent blessings, we’re hoping to grow stronger than ever!  We’re quite proud of this achievement, especially since these activities are run totally by dedicated and passionate volunteers.

New and exciting activities are always introduced to keep the program exciting. Activities are planned for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays:

*”mindful aging” segment comprises guided but  “free form”  discussions on life topics  and experiences of seniors as well as periodic presentations by experts on relevant areas  of elder law, government provided benefits, finance and health care.

  1. Yoga and Pranayama: The Senior program offers Yoga and Pranayama lessons led by experienced teachers, at a level suitable for our senior participants. These sessions have shown to gradually improve physical flexibility and enhance breathing among those who consistently take part.Session Timings: Tues Wed Thurs 10:00-11:00 a.m. 
  2. Bhagavad Gita Study: The Senior Program offers an intense study of the Bhagavad Gita by reviewing the text and deriving interpretations in a study circle format. The sessions are further enhanced with input from scholarly individuals who explain and promote discussions of stories that are applicable to one’s life.Session Timings: Tues: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. study of Bhagavad Gita conducted in Hindi.
  3. Mindful Aging: This segment comprises guided but  “free form”  discussions on life topics  and experiences of seniors as well as periodic presentations by experts on relevant areas  of elder law, government provided benefits, finance and health care. Session Timings: Wednesdays:1st, 2nd and 5th Wednesdays (if needed) 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
  4. Folk Dancing for fun: Taught by experienced South Indian and North Indian dance teachers. Session Timing: Wednesdays: 3rd Wednesday 11:15 – 12:15 p.m.
  5. Book/articles reading/discussions: Relevant books and articles are presented by lead co-ordinators and moderators lead meaningful discussions. Session Timing: Wednesdays: 4th Wednesday 11:15 – 12:15 p.m.
  6. Bhajans: The Senior Program offers a session on Bhajan singing led by experienced music teachers. The group is taught Bhajans from various Indian languages, which are then sung during different festivals at the Temple. This class does not require any previous vocal training.Session Timings: Wed 1:00 to 1:45 p.m.
  7. Conversational Sanksrit For Beginners: This is a beginners class to learn to converse in Sanskritam, an ancient language. The class is taught by a Samskrita-Bharati-trained teacher. Samskrita Bharati is an international organization, based in India, whose aim is to teach Samskritam to one and all with the motivation of making Samskritam a day-to-day language.Session Timing: Wed 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.
  8. Mantra Chanting: The Senior Program offers a session on Veda Mantra chanting taught by the Temple priests, with special emphasis on appropriate pronunciation and meters. Upon learning, the seniors are able to chant along during pertinent occasions at the Temple.Session Timings: Thurs Time 11:15-12:00 p.m.
  9. Board Games: The Senior Program has experienced individuals facilitate fun; mentally stimulating activities such as games of Carom, Chess, Cards etc. These games are designed to sharpen our cognition and keep our minds active, all while enjoying some friendly competition.Session Timings: Tues Thurs : Based on the attendees
  10. Health Lectures: The Senior program offers lectures and workshops on health related topics as well as other topics of interest such as financial planning, etc. These are announced earlier so as to encourage more seniors to participate. Such lectures are also offered on weekends.Session Timings: Variable
  11. Hindu Temple Choir: The Temple Outreach Program offers a 2 hour session of devotional group singing in the form of a choir. The choir is directed by talented musicians who offer voice training and technical notes on how to sing in unison. The program is not limited to seniors; all adults are welcome to take part. The participants often gather to sing as a group at various Temple functions.Session Timings: Suspended as of now.
